When he sunk into a dark swamp of restless dreams he couldn’t escape it anymore. In his dreams he couldn’t escape himself anymore, he was at the mercy of his own subconscious. In his dreams he was always running, and always hungry. It was a different kind of hunger then he was used to, it was a deeper kind of hunger. Not the kind of hunger that is known to a human being.

And there was always the eye. The bright silver eye that was watching him everywhere he went. He was running over wide snowy plains, not feeling the cold under his feet. He was not running towards something, he was running away from something, something dark and hideous, something that lured in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to strike. He was fleeing it, but he couldn’t escape it. Not really. It was always there, somewhere behind him and the only thing he could do was to keep moving. And the strangest thing of all was that he was running on four legs…

When he woke up that morning he had forgot about his dream, and he was looking forward to go to school for a change. When he stepped out of the house he whistled, when he looked over his shoulder he could read the surprise into his mother’s eyes while she was watching him go. Normally he hated school more than life itself, but now he stepped into the world cheerful while his eyes sought the bedroom window of the big white house, where he hoped to find her sitting in the window. He couldn’t see anything so he got on his bike. The big oaks that were guarding the roadsides like ancient warriors, silent and majestic. The leaf had turned brown, yellow, orange and even red. When he stood on the pedals of his bike to get up to speed he felt as free as a bird. For a moment all his worries, all his dark thoughts that lay over him like permanent shadows disappeared for a moment. And the only thing he was thinking of was that girl. She occupied his mind and drove all the bad things aside.

When he parked his bike and walked into the school’s hallway he saw her. She was chatting with her boyfriend while her boyfriend stood by her as a sort of prison guard. When Raphael passed her he caught her glance for a moment. She shunned eyes quickly and blushed. As if a bee stung him her boyfriend turned his head to him and gave him a deadly glance. Raphael ignored him and went on his way. Then he sensed the boy following him with long strides. He had a sort of six sense for those things. He had to admit he had been in more fights then he indented to, even knocking down that bullies hadn’t really satisfied him. It was like something in him woke up the rivalry in other boys, he was seldom the one who started something, though always the one who ended it.
